The feature for Planetary terrain is still in early development. Current information regarding the game world play size is not 100% concrete, but the progress so far on terrain has helped estimate what can be expected for Early Access.
Early Access will likely feature either a smaller-scale planet or a limited section of a larger planet. This way, the planetary-scale environment can be tested along with foliage, entities, and core systems, as a performance benchmark - With the goal to help identify optimization issues and reduce risk for the Early Access release.
As mentioned in various Devlogs and FAQ posts, the spherical terrain and planet are handcrafted, with little to no procedural generation. This decision was part of the vision from the beginning. The focus is not on creating a massive world, but to deliver a world packed with detail, rather than an open, barren, and uninteresting landscape.
This is why a significant amount of time and prototyping has been taken to develop with the right tools needed to craft the planetary terrain.
Note: Initially, during the legacy Pre-Alpha phases, a non-planetary, flat play area was being designed as a testing bed for Early Access. This area was still quite large and took around 10-20 minutes to jog across. This area will not be present for Early Access.
