SMES (Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage)

The SMES (Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage) is used to capture and store energy in a magnetic field. Due to its High Power Density a SMES is ideal for maintaining power grids. DC is passed through the superconducting coil, it generates a magnetic field and stores energy. Superconducting coil, power conditioning system and cryogenically cooled refrigerator. Once the superconducting coil is charged, the current will not decay and the magnetic energy can be stored indefinitely.
